She legally emancipated herself at 15. She moved down to Los Angeles, where she was discovered standing outside of a gym refusing to go in because she thought it would have been 'too corny'.
She landed her first starring role in Gregg Araki's film The Doom Generation, which got her nominated for Best Newcomer at the 1996 Independent Spirit Awards. Also in 1996 she got a supporting role in Wes Craven's Scream, as Sidney Prescott's friend Tatum Riley.
