Description: The media has noted that several of the semi-finalists have previously had record deals, including Kristy Lee Cook, Michael Johns, and Carly Smithson. Idol rules state that contestants may have had a record deal in the past, but are still eligible as long as they are no longer under contract when Idol begins. None of the finalists are currently under contract. This season of American Idol produced two Top 3 contestants that were never in bottom 2 or 3, David Archuleta and David Cook. They will join Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks, Jordin Sparks, and Melinda Doolittle as the Top 3 contestants to never have been in the bottom 3 or 2.
